On 11th March 1995 at the age of 55 after a serious illness Professor Dr, agr. habil. F. Adalbert Schulz, my admired teacher and supervisor has gone.
Our cooperation began at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. At the Institut für Phythopathologie of the Faculty of Agriculture Professor Schulz had created an international working group on post-harvest problems. After many years of activity in Kiel he was called to the Technische Universität Berlin in 1988. He became Director of the newly created Department of Phytomedicine at the Faculty of International Agricultural Development, which he later also was at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.
Soon after his start in Berlin, he became assistant dean of the faculty and later on dean. In this function he accompanied the employees and students into the fusion with the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture of the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. In this newly established faculty he was member of the Faculties' Council and the first Acting Director of the Institute for Elementary Plant Product on Furthermore, he was a member of the Academic Senate and of the Council of the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin in addition to these numerous responsibilities in the academic administrations, he was particulary engaged in international organisations of research and technical cooperation, for example FAO and GTZ.
In the research area of phytomedicine he worked on plant production as well as especially in the field of post-harvest protection. Because of his engagement post-harvest protection gained its superior position in agricultural science. Professor Schulz developed the section of post-harvest protection in the tropics and subtropics as am important research area. Numerous dissertations concerning post-harvest problems have been directed technically by him. He supervised the first world-wide scientific programme of biological control of a storage pest, the Larger Grain Borer Prostephanus truncatus (Horn).
The great personality of Professor Schulz, even if only seen from the brief glance at this part of his life and work, remains an inspiration. In spite of all his scientific and administration responsibilities, he never neglected his fond personal relationships. I would like to thank him particulary for all I received from him during the years of our propitious collaboration. He will always be a model for me.
