Farmers can apply a number of integrated methods compatible with biological stored-product protection in order to further contain losses after T.n. release. These include sanitary measures, as well as proven traditional methods such as the application of plant-derived substances.

The treatment of stores with insecticides, still recommended in regions at acute risk, is consistent with the particular biology of the beneficial organism, as T.n. will only colonise a maize store if and when lured by the pheromone of its prey. P.t. will not be able infest a treated store, nor will T.n. be attracted.

If insecticide treatment becomes unavoidable, farmers can reduce expenditure on synthetic chemicals by "getting it right", and giving beneficial organisms a chance. Getting it right is described in a leaflet available from the GTZ.
